Frankincense is a fragrant resin obtained from the boswellia tree. It has many uses: for its beautiful Oriental fragrance, to clean rooms and objects, or for personal care. Various superstitions claim that frankincense can also purify your soul. Frankincense is often used in various combinations, for example with myrrh and balsam, which give it a specific spicy scent when lit. There are four main types of resin, differing mainly in the time of harvest. The resin is gathered by chopping the bark of trees, which releases resin from the tree; this resin then hardens in the shape of a tear. In the wild, the boswellia tree can grow in very unusual and inhospitable places, such as on rocks. The resin has a high content of terpenes, sesquiterpenes, and diterpenes which give it a strong aroma when burned. High quality frankincense is widely used by the Catholic church in its rites and prayers. You can also use various combinations of frankincense and its aromas at home where it can give a beautiful scent to your rooms and relax your mind. Immerse yourself in the distinct Oriental aroma and enjoy the cleansing effects of incense!
To burn incense, you will need: a censer, tweezers, quick light coals, and matches or a lighter. You can also use clean dry sand, but it is not required. If you use sand, pour it into the censer in a layer about one centimetre thick. Pick up the coal with the tweezers and light it. Keep it lit for about twenty seconds until it stops sparking. Then place it in the censer. After about a minute, start dropping frankincense on top of the coal. Start with a small amount and gradually add more, according to your preference.
Frankincense should not be handled by children. Always use a censer intended for this purpose. Never leave a censer with burning coal unattended. After you finish, extinguish the coal with water.
