Big Cosmetic Spring Clean with Marie Kondo!

Spring clean

Do you hate the concept of spring clean? This one is inspired by Marie Kondo, and you’ll love it! Once your cosmetic stash is organised, you can really treat yourself.

The KonMari Method

When Marie Kondo published her book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up nine years ago, she started a revolution. The concept was simple: When you get rid of the physical clutter, your life becomes better too. Throwing out unnecessary objects makes you realise what you do and don’t want in your life and what you’re needlessly holding onto. We don’t really need much - it’s best to stick to a few things we really value. Her approach became known as the KonMari method. Her book was soon translated into more than 40 languages and in 2015, Marie Kondo was included in Forbes magazine’s list of most influential people. It’s no wonder - her method really brings order into your personal space. She later published Spark Joy where she’s developing her method and principles further. So how about applying them to your beauty stash?

5 Rules of Tidying with Marie Kondo

Start by getting rid of all expired products. It’s usually the stuff we don’t much like or use anyway! According to Marie Kondo, the use of beauty products and makeup is a ritual that should spark joy – so toss out everything that doesn’t make you happy (including that fragrance you don’t like but you still wear it because it was a gift from a dear friend). If you don’t feel like throwing things out, you can always donate them – it’s part of the Marie Kondo philosophy. Now, let’s take a look at what’s left!

Store your skin care and body care close to the bathroom sink so that they’re within reach. Makeup should be kept separate in two makeup bags or boxes – first one will contain the stuff you use every day (and can be thrown in your handbag), the second one will have your “special occasion” makeup. Put your fragrances on a shelf and all your brushes, mascaras and similar products in cups to keep them organised.

And don’t forget about Marie Kondo’s 5 rules of tidying up:

  • Commit to the change and stick to your purpose.
  • Put all your stuff in one pile and get rid of everything you don’t need.
  • Sort your things according to your heart, not your rational mind.
  • Keep only things that bring you joy.
  • Learn to store your things in a vertical position if possible and to always keep them in the same place.
