Non-comedogenic Skin Care

No more worrying about blackheads and excessive sebum production caused by clogged pores! Simply use non-comedogenic products – or skin care with non-comedogenic ingredients. Blackheads or comedones occur as a result of a clogged sebaceous gland and sebum oxidation. They’re caused by hormones as well as oily cosmetic ingredients such as oils, fats, alcohols and stabilisers.

Non-comedogenic cosmetics are free of these ingredients, which makes them fantastic for oily and acne-prone skin. However, they’re suitable for virtually any skin type.

Classification of Comedogenic Substances

Every cosmetic ingredient has a level of comedogenicity from 0 (non-comedogenic) to 5 (comedogenic). The higher the number, the more likely it will clog your pores and cause blackheads.

Examples of comedogenic and non-comedogenic ingredients:

  • 5 (comedogenic) – sea algae extract, SLS (sodium lauryl sulphate), soy oil
  • 4 – coconut oil, olive oil, cocoa butter, cetearyl alcohol
  • 3 – avocado oil, evening primrose oil, sesame oil, sorbitan oleate
  • 2 – apricot oil, pumpkin oil, tallow, BHA (Butylated Hydroxyanisole), beeswax
  • 1 – buckthorn oil, rosehip oil, butylene glycol, beta-carotene, calendula
  • 0 (non-comedogenic) – argan oil, hemp oil, shea butter, panthenol, glycerol

If you have dry skin, you don’t need to worry about the higher numbers. On the contrary – ingredients of level 3, 4 or 5 will nourish your skin beautifully.
