You work hard by going to the gym several times a week. But did you know it’s a good idea to work on your pelvic floor muscles as well? This is what is known as Kegel exercises – named after the American gynaecologist Arnold Kegel. You can train without equipment, but tools such as vaginal weights, pelvic trainers or Kegel balls will make your vaginal exercises most effective. What can these sexual wellness gadgets do?
A strong pelvic floor is important for various bodily functions. It increases your ability to consciously retract or relax the pelvic muscles, which include the vagina, the urethra and the rectum.
And the benefits continue in the bedroom. When you strengthen your pelvic floor, you can also look forward to:
A vaginal weight (also known as a Kegel weight or pelvic weight) is a pelvic floor muscle exerciser with a soft silicone surface. Inside is a weight, usually made of steel. The size and weight vary from model to model, and you can choose on the basis of your ability and experience.
You insert the weight into the vagina and strengthen it by contracting the pelvic muscles to keep it inside, so that gravity doesn’t cause it to fall out.
An electronic vibrating weight also rewards you for exercising. It can be equipped with pressure sensors or remote control. And when it comes down to it, you can even use it instead of a regular vibrator and indulge in a moment of pleasure, whether on your own or with a partner.
Apply a sufficient amount of lubricant to the weight and insert it into your vagina so that the loop remains outside (similar to inserting a tampon). Then you can slowly get used to it and start adjusting to the weight.
You should then engage in some sort of physical activity. It doesn’t have to be anything demanding. To start with, some housework or a walk is more than enough. The important thing is that you’re standing and walking. This way, gravity can work on the weight and you have to hold it in with your muscles.
Advanced users can also go outside with the weight, go for a run or even go swimming.
We recommend using a pelvic floor exerciser for 15–30 minutes every day. However, if your pelvic muscles are not used to the weight, they can get tired quickly. Always try to listen to your body. Start with just a few minutes a day and work your way up.
After each use, wash the pelvic muscle exerciser thoroughly with water and mild soap, or use a special sex toy cleaner. Always store dry, ideally in the original box or cloth bag. You will often find one already included in the packaging.
