How does a water flosser work?
A water flosser is a dental device that uses the principle of a controlled stream of water and microbubbles, or irrigation. The water stream carefully cleans hard-to-reach areas from food residue, bacteria and plaque, all without disturbing the surface of your teeth or gums. Microbubbles then reach under the line of the gums where they destroy harmful bacteria.
Our tip: Fill the reservoir of the oral irrigator with mouthwash in order to gently massage the gums and relieve unpleasant irritation that comes with periodontitis, gingivitis or other conditions.
How to find the best water flosser?
When shopping for a water flosser, it’s important to consider its use, required water pressure, design (how much space it will take up) and additional functions of the irrigator jet that can make your daily routine easier.
Types of oral irrigators according to water pressure
It’s up to you what exactly you’ll use your oral irrigator for. Do you want to mainly focus on the cleaning of interdental spaces, or do you want to combat gingivitis and periodontitis?
- Water flossers with very high water pressure are designed to perfectly clean the interdental spaces you struggle to reach with your toothbrush or dental floss.
- Water flossers with low pressure and a pulsating water stream are ideal for gum infections. Their gentle massage improves the general condition and strength of your gums.
- Water flossers with pressure control can massage your gums as well as thoroughly remove plaque.
Water flossers according to design
How to choose an oral irrigator that will be perfect for your bathroom or your travel bag? The size affects how many settings the device has and how much water pressure it uses.
- A tabletop water flosser is great even for the most demanding users, because it allows you to regulate the water pressure, has a big reservoir (up to 600ml) and can store replacement irrigator heads. Its water pressure is between 0.6 – 6 bars.
- A travel water flosser has a built-in reservoir between 120 and 220ml in the handle. It’s usually good for gum massage as well as cleaning of interdental spaces, and it easily fits into your backpack or handbag. Its water pressure is between 2 – 5.5 bars.
- An oral station is an ideal solution if you want to also use an electric toothbrush. This station includes a water reservoir, an oscillating or sonic toothbrush with an oral irrigator plus all the replacement heads, all nicely organised in one place. The water pressure is similar to a tabletop oral irrigator.
- A faucet-mounted oral irrigator is a special type of water flosser for those who want to test the benefits of these devices first. You simply attach this oral irrigator to the faucet and adjust the pressure by turning the tap. This is a compact and affordable type of water-flossing device – however your faucet might not be able to give you the range of intensity you need to use it properly.
Handy functions of a water flosser
- You can choose a replacement jet for the cleaning of braces, your tongue, or periodontal pockets.
- In terms of charging, an oral irrigator either has a rechargeable battery, runs on single-use batteries (both types are great for travel), or it’s powered through a mains cable that always needs to be plugged in when the device is in use.
- You can adjust the water pressure for individual modes.
- A pressure sensor alerts you if you’re applying too much pressure on the water flosser.
- Microbubbles remove bacteria from the gum line.
- A timer allows you to set a time recommended by your doctor.
- A charge indicator lets you know if your device has enough energy.
- A wall-mounted holder helps you save space in your bathroom when storing your water flosser.
- A travel case helps you transport your water flosser easily.
How to use a water flosser?
Cleaning your mouth with an oral irrigator will be more effective if you do it for at least one minute, twice a day.
- Before using the device for the first time, make sure to read the manufacturer’s instructions.
- When you first get your water flosser, fill the reservoir with water, aim the jet into the sink and let all the water from the reservoir flow out in order to clean the irrigator.
- Fill the reservoir with mouthwash or lukewarm tap water and insert the reservoir back into the base of the device.
- Grab the handle of the irrigator, lean over the sink, place the jet into your mouth and turn the device on.
- Open your mouth slightly to let the water run down into the sink.
- Always aim the nozzle vertically against the gum, in the direction of the interdental space.
- Close your mouth, turn off the device and only then remove it from your mouth.
