What causes foot odour?
Foot odour, or bromodosis, is caused by bacterial overgrowth on sweaty feet that feeds on dead skin cells. These bacteria then excrete waste products containing butyric acid, which is responsible for the unpleasant odour. The cause of smelly feet therefore creates ideal conditions for bacteria to grow, as not only do they have plenty of food, but are also at the optimum temperature and humidity thanks to the sweat on our socks and shoes.
