Taking care of your teeth has never been cooler. Step away from boring toothbrushes and welcome new technologies into your bathroom! They make dental care more fun, but, even more importantly, more thorough than ever. Do you want to know how to brush your teeth properly and what tools are the best?

The right steps are key

The foundation of good dental hygiene is the thorough removal of plaque from all areas of the tooth. “We should be brushing our teeth at least twice a day, in the morning after breakfast and in the evening before bed, not eating or drinking anything but water after that,”  recommends dental hygienist Lucie Hronková, DiS., from Dental Office H33.

And don’t forget about the interdental spaces. “Once a day is enough. Your dental hygienist will teach you the correct technique and then check during regular visits to make sure your teeth stay clean and healthy for good,” says the dental hygienist.

How often should you replace your toothbrush?

Do you replace your toothbrush regularly, or do you wait until it has nothing left to give before reaching for a new one? “You should replace your toothbrush approximately every 3 months. This ensures that the bristles stay effective, which can be undermined by fraying that isn’t yet visible to the naked eye,” explains the dental hygienist, adding that you should always change your toothbrush after having a cold or flu.

How to pick the right toothbrush? Picking on the basis of the colour you like isn’t enough. “The ideal toothbrush should be soft, with a small head and densely-packed, straight-cut bristles,” recommends Lucie Hronková.

Get with the times! This will make your job easier

Smart technologies have already helped improve almost every aspect of our lives, and dental care is no exception. Electric toothbrushes and water flossers are proof of this. Why should they be of interest to you?

For healthy gums and a beautiful smile

Compared to a regular toothbrush, an electric toothbrush offers several advantages:

  1. More effective cleaning: The vibrating or rotating motion helps remove more plaque and food debris compared to a manual toothbrush.
  2. Easier to use: Using an electric toothbrush is usually easier thanks to its automatic motions.
  3. Better reach: You can choose an electric toothbrush with cleaning heads of different shapes and sizes. When brushing your teeth, you can reach hard-to-reach areas better.
  4. Various features: Electric toothbrushes also offer additional features such as different cleaning modes, pressure sensors or built-in timers to help you clean your teeth more efficiently.

Water flossers

Do you also love the feeling of having a clean, fresh mouth? To maximise the efficacy of your dental care routine, use a water flosser. Thanks to its jet tip, you can clean your interdental spaces thoroughly, removing any residual food particles and plaque.

You’ll be able to clean even hard-to-reach areas along the gumline, which is where inflammation-causing bacteria often build up. This helps reduce the risk of gum disease. The gentle stream of water also massages the gums wonderfully, increasing blood flow and improving gum health with regular use.

Perfectly clean with a stream of water

TIP: Water flossers are a great addition to your dental care routine if you have sensitive teeth. This is because they allow you to regulate the pressure and temperature of the water, minimising irritation in sensitive areas of the mouth.

How to take care of children’s teeth

As soon as the first tooth is out, it’s time to start brushing. Choose a soft children’s toothbrush and brush twice a day. At about 1 year of age, when children usually have 4 teeth on top and 4 on the bottom, take your child to the dentist. You’ll be able to discuss dental hygiene, as well as the proper use of fluoride and its amount.

To make brushing fun even for your little ones

From the age of 2 at the latest, teach your children the correct brushing technique and show them how to use dental floss or interdental brushes. With the help of your dentist or dental hygienist, explain to them why it’s important to take good care of their teeth, using games or rewards to make brushing a part of their routine they look forward to. You may even find sonic toothbrushes for children helpful; many of them also use fun apps.

Best foods for pearly white teeth

How often do you think about the health of your teeth when shopping for groceries? It most probably doesn’t cross your mind. But you’d be surprised to know that there are foods that support their health and strength from within. Among them are dairy products, which contain calcium that helps strengthen tooth enamel. Then there are fruits and vegetables which promote gum health and reduce the risk of tooth decay, nuts rich in calcium and phosphorus, or whole grain foods with a high content of B vitamins and iron, which are great for gum health.

Even just drinking plain water helps to rinse your mouth, reducing the build-up of acid which increases the risk of tooth decay. You can also enjoy a cup of green tea with polyphenols, which protect your teeth and reduce the formation of plaque.

Do you now have a better understanding of how to take the right care of your teeth and why you should indulge in the latest treatments? Waste no time, so that you can be proud of your beautiful and healthy smile as soon as possible.
