I think we can all agree that long and curled eyelashes look lovely. But if you overdo it with mascara or have naturally straight lashes, the effect is exactly the opposite - mascara makes your lashes heavier and straighter. Therefore, here's some advice on how to prevent this. It's a small step that takes only a few seconds, but the effect can be absolutely stunning on some people.

What are eyelash curlers for?

Simply put, eyelash curlers are a kind of mini curler that helps shape the lashes so that they curl upwards. Most of the time these are metal instruments, however the silicone insert that comes in contact with the lashes is very important and should indeed be soft and gentle.

Correct procedure

  1. Place the eyelash curler on mascara free lashes as close to the lid as possible.
  2. Check in the mirror that all the lashes are held in the tongs and squeeze gently.
  3. You should not squeeze the skin, but really only the eyelashes, and closely at the roots.
  4. If you like, you can press and hold or open and close a few times. That's it!

How to select an eyelash curler

First of all, there are a large number of curlers that take into account the different eye shapes and sizes of different ethnicities. In our geographical latitudes, the most common curlers are classically rounded in a semicircle. But even here one-size-fits-all does not apply.

If you have smaller or deeper-set eyes, a narrower curler will suit you, and conversely, if you have a long eyelid, you may need to curl your lashes twice and move the curler across your eyelid.

I also recommend trying the grip when choosing a curler. It should fit perfectly in your hand and the handling should be really comfortable (otherwise you will quickly abandon using them). As far as the material is concerned, it should be hypoallergenic metal and high quality silicone, after all you are almost touching your eyes with the curler. From my own experience, I recommend the trusty classic from Tweezerman.

Why curl your lashes

Human eyelashes are like hair, only very fine and delicate. They are attached to your eyelid, and when you curl them, pull lightly on the skin, the eye opens and the eyelid lifts. This effect is especially noticeable in those with more mature skin around the eyes or those with droopy eyelids. You can then fix the curl with mascara, which is applied mainly at the roots (and less at the ends, so that the ‘mascara’ does not fall off). And you're done.

So before venturing into false eyelashes or other solutions, try a curler. You may just be surprised at how beautiful your lashes really are.
