Why and when is International Women’s Day celebrated? Believe it or not, the roots of this global women’s day go back to the very start of the last century. On 8 March 1908, a strike of garment workers took place in New York, USA. The women fought not only for fair working conditions, treatment and pay, but also for the right to vote. And it was not for nothing – the strike triggered a whole wave of struggles for women’s equality. The efforts, not only of the garment workers but of all strong women and women fighting for their rights, are therefore commemorated every year on 8 March.
