Whether you’re choosing swaddles for newborns, pram or car seat blankets, or a convertible blanket that can easily be transformed into a swaddle, make sure you pick the correct size for your baby’s age, as well as a variety of practical options to make your job easier on busy days.

Swaddles for babies

The swaddle is one of the basic items needed for a newborn baby and can be used until the baby is around four to nine months old. It is a little fabric “sleeping bag” made of firm fabric, in which you can wrap the baby easily. Many versions are available on the market, including:

• A traditional swaddle with a firm insert or removable liner depending on the current weather allows for tight swaddling, which prevents spontaneous movement while your baby sleeps. This type of swaddle needs to be tied up whilst the baby’s arms are folded close to the body.
• The ergonomic baby swaddle has sewn-in arm flaps, making the tying process a little easier.
• Quick swaddle wraps for babies are simply fastened with Velcro or laces and do not wrap the baby as tightly as traditional ones. They are also suitable as a layer for a pram.

Baby blankets

Baby blankets are the ideal accessory for the pram, car seat or at home, plus they are always handy and can be used as a play blanket for the baby.  Blankets for babies are available in a wide range of colours, designs, sizes and materials, so you can easily match them with the pram or cot and they can also be a great gift for mums-to-be.

• Summer blankets are thin and suitable mainly for summer nights. A cotton or knitted baby blanket for the pram is great, and they are very easy to wash.
• A winter baby blanket usually has several layers to provide warmth and comfort for your baby in cold weather.
• Versatile baby blankets have poppers or zips to create a hood or sleeping bag if required.
• Car seat blankets are specially designed for older babies and are also called car seat blanket wraps, and have holes for the seat harness to fit through for easy fastening. The special shape of this blanket lets you wrap the baby and if necessary, it can easily be rolled out into a blanket for their pram or cot.

Sleeping bags

Sleeping bags are designed for toddlers to stop them kicking them off at night. These bags allow children to move their arms freely and some versions may have long sleeves or a hood.

Material used for baby blankets and swaddles

Pick the material for the blanket or swaddle by season; additional layers for colder days can usually be purchased. You can find blankets and wraps made of pleasant and non-scratchy materials that are kind to children’s skin.

• Cotton has high absorbency, durability and breathability and is easy to look after. It is suitable for use all year round.
• Wool is ideal for the winter months because of its warmth.
• Down has excellent thermal properties and is particularly suitable as a down insert for winter swaddle wraps. A disadvantage can be that it is more difficult to look after.
• Terry is a cotton fabric with a polyester blend that is highly absorbent and soft.
• Flannel is a very breathable, soft material that’s especially suitable for spring and autumn. A flannel blanket is also suitable as a play blanket for newborns and older babies.
• Synthetic fabrics, which can sometimes be combined with cotton, are very durable and are also very affordable.
• Bamboo and bamboo fibre fabrics are suitable for children with very sensitive skin. Thanks to their high breathability and antibacterial properties, bamboo baby blankets provide maximum comfort, especially in the summer months as a summer swaddle.
• Muslin is a finely woven material that is perfectly breathable, lightweight and gentle on your baby’s skin. This is the ideal material for a baby blanket for a pram on warm days or for a muslin swaddle wrap for restful sleep.
• Minky, or plush cuddle fabric, made from polyester, is usually combined with cotton and is a very soft material ideal for cold days.
• Merino or sheep’s wool is very soft to the touch, but also has high warmth and thermal insulation capacity (in summer it cools, in winter it warms). Merino is the ideal material for a winter blanket for a baby that hugs and warms but does not overheat.
