Amla (Indian Gooseberry, Amalaki) is the fruit of the Phyllanthus emblica tree, which mainly grows in India and other parts of south-east Asia. It has long been one of the key ingredients in Ayurvedic hair care and skin care – it is packed with antioxidants and vitamin C. Amla has become popular because of its regenerative and strengthening properties, especially with lovers of natural cosmetics.
How is Indian Gooseberry used in cosmetics?
In Ayurvedic cosmetics, Amla gooseberry most often appears as Amla oil and Amla extract – both forms are often combined together for more powerful effects.
- Amla oil is a mixture of carrier oils (for example coconut) and Amla extract.
- Amla extract is most commonly found in powder form (Amla powder/Amalaki powder), either in tincture of concentrated extract form. It is used for creams, serums, shampoos and masks.
In India, the Amla fruit features commonly in people's everyday diet – it is eaten fresh or dried or drunk as a juice or tea. Because of its benefits when consumed, it is also used as a dietary supplement in Ayurveda.
