Split ends and brittle hair – problems that appear different at first glance, but actually go hand in hand. What causes brittle and split hair, and what can you do to make it soft and strong again? We'll advise you on how to save brittle hair!
You can recognise brittle hair quite easily. In addition to being fragile and appearing dull and lifeless, there is a visible break in the hair, often as a small narrow or white point. When gently pulled, the hair breaks off easily at this point. The hair strand remains unhealed at the break and then starts to fray more easily.
Split ends most often occur at the point where the hair was previously broken. The cuticle is damaged, individual strands of hair separate and the ends "split". Split ends along the entire length of the hair are no exception either, especially if the splitting is not stopped in time.
Some people are more prone to hair breakage than others. Fine, curly, or naturally dry hair is particularly susceptible.
It is a combination of external and internal factors that weaken and damage hair. What should you watch out for?
Once a hair is split, it will never "truly" heal. However, products against split ends can help temporarily smooth and seal the hair fibre from the outside. Most importantly, they strengthen the hair so it doesn't split or break in the long run.
The ideal shampoo for preventing hair breakage should contain nourishing ingredients such as panthenol, glycerine or silk proteins. Plant oils (e.g. argan or coconut) and aloe vera are also excellent, as they help to hydrate the hair and improve its elasticity. Choose a gentle, shampoo that is sulphate-free to avoid drying out the hair unnecessarily.
A conditioner should nourish the hair and seal its surface. Look for ingredients such as argan or jojoba oil, ceramides, and vitamin E. Use it after every wash – apply from the mid-lengths to the ends and leave on for at least 2 minutes (or as long as recommended on the packaging).
A hair mask for split ends should be rich in hydrating and strengthening ingredients, such as keratin, amino acids, oils (e.g., macadamia, avocado) and vitamins. Treat yourself to a mask once or twice a week. Apply to washed hair, leave on for the recommended time, then rinse thoroughly.
A hair serum for damaged ends should contain light silicones that coat and smooth the ends. Keratin, panthenol, or oils (such as argan oil) are also suitable. Apply to dry or damp ends, ideally after each wash, or as needed.
Argan, coconut, macadamia, almond, and castor oil are excellent choices. These oils nourish the hair, give it shine, and protect it from further damage. Apply a few drops to dry or damp hair 2–3 times a week, or as an intensive treatment before washing.
Hair breakage prevention products are important, but you will achieve greater results if you give your hair the right support both internally and externally.
Visit your hairdresser at least once every two months. You may be sad to see your hair get shorter, but if you don't trim the split ends as soon as possible, the split ends will continue to spread upward. So have patience and maintain a healthy length.
If you find a split or broken hair on your head, carefully cut it off with sharp scissors just above the break. This is the only way to prevent it from continuing to split towards the root. Do not use old, blunt scissors – they can break and damage the hair even more.
In order to make your hair stronger and thicker, adjust your routine accordingly.
Don't forget to include plenty of healthy fats, vitamins A and C, magnesium, iron, and calcium in your diet. These nutrients promote hair elasticity, shine, and strength. Eat a varied diet with plenty of vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, and high-quality fats.
