Discover what retinol serum can do for you
Retinol serum (or vitamin A serum) is one of the most sought-after products for anti-ageing cosmetics due to its near miraculous effects. It can do wonders for your skin – smooth wrinkles, improve acne, tighten pores, and much more!
What does retinol serum do? Retinol serum benefits
- It fights the signs of skin ageing, smoothing fine lines and reducing deep wrinkles.
- Since retinol is a powerful antioxidant, retinol serum helps the skin fight free radicals.
- It has exfoliating effects, removing the outer layer of dead skin cells. This smooths the skin and ensures it is radiant and soft to the touch.
- It combats acne and clears clogged pores.
- It boosts the formation of collagen fibres, thereby increasing skin elasticity.
- It balances skin pH and tightens large pores.
- It boosts the natural regeneration of skin cells.
- It alleviates hyperpigmentation and uneven skin pigmentation.
How to use retinol serum
Always apply retinol serum to makeup-free, cleansed and dry skin on the face, neck and décolletage. Avoid the eye and lip areas. Then apply a face cream.
Retinol serums are suitable for all skin types. However, retinol can be slightly drying, so after use, reach for an intensely hydrating night cream.
To prevent wrinkles in younger skin (up to about 30 years old), only use retinol serum once or twice a week. If you have mature skin, with time, you can even use it every day.
When might retinol serum cause problems?
Since retinol is a very potent active ingredient, some caution is needed when using it. What should I be aware of?
- Only use retinol serum at night, as sunlight can not only reduce its effectiveness, but can also cause skin irritation. And even if you use retinol serum at night, always apply a high SPF sunscreen the next day.
- Do not use cosmetics with retinol if pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Pay attention to the concentration. Even the best retinol serum can irritate the skin quite easily if you’re not used to it. If you are just starting to use retinol, choose the lowest concentration possible, i.e. the gentlest serum (0.1% retinol), and introduce it into your skincare routine gradually – only once or twice a week at first. With good tolerance, you can slowly increase the frequency and gradually move on to a higher concentration – a serum with 0.5% retinol and so on.
- Do not layer retinol serum with cosmetics that contain AHAs, BHAs or vitamin C. These ingredients, like retinol, are exfoliating, and combining them can irritate the skin. It is best to alternate them on different days or use the method of one in the morning, one in the evening.
